Strangely enough it wasn't a selectable option for me in the first moment as well, only once I checked later. Make sure if the app asks you to set it as default to agree. Not sure if it takes time or a restart for it to appear, would love to know about your experience!

There is an app Zettle by PayPal which is not available for all regions that you can tap to pay with Paypal.

When you register on the app (Curve account actually) you have to provide and validate a phone number, which is suppose to be from EU or UK in order to use the payment support.
Also you have to provide an ID, which again will set you on a "region".

Unfortunately, it's really annoying that GPay no longer works in everyday life. I switched to the Curve app, but I often have problems with it not being recognized. PayPal Wallet isn't available in Austria. Does anyone have an alternative?

If I understand you, you put your phone to the terminal for payment and nothing happens? If yes, go to the app setting (for example, hold your finger at Curve app, then tap info) and enable Autostart in background.
I set up Curve Pay on my Mi 11 Ultra two days ago and used it to pay at the supermarket for the first time today.
It worked wonderfully. I live in Germany.
So far, it seems to be a serious alternative to Google Wallet.

I shopped at the first store, and it worked there, but it didn't work at the other two, and I can't see any pattern as to why it doesn't work.
The terminal beeps but doesn't respond until it says, "Please insert your card."

Hi, after the end of xiaomi.eu module fix, I move from Google Pay to Curve Pay. I live in Spain.
I don´t like very much Curve people behavior, because spam me a lot of emails in just two days, talking about the excellence of Pro.
Talking about, exclusively, the working of the app, it's good. I just paid twice today. The first time, app need my fingerprint, but the second time, it's not needed.

I have now successfully paid with Curve Pay six times.
It didn't work once: I had unlocked my smartphone a few minutes before the payment process, and then the app wanted my fingerprint again during the payment. That's when it went wrong.
