Rn3 Qualcomm Google Sign In After Factory Reset Set

I sold my phone after a factory reset via the settings. It was running MIUI 8 stock. Now the guy who bought it says it is asking for a previously synchronised Google account. Apparently this is a known issue. Anyway round it? He can't get to the recovery menu either, just fastboot.

I think it's not asking for a Google, but for a Mi-Account. Log in to i.mi.com click on the top left on x connected and delete your old device.
