May I suggest the following which will give you the feature your looking for and much more. Search for xMIUI by SolarWarez. Works with miui8, on booth kenzo and mi5 and yes you need to be running a different framework, like xposed or wsm.

Redmi note 3 pro, Update from latest stable with no problems. Only thing i notice is that when closing all apps for more ram the phone freezes for about 3 seconds. Not sure if it's my phone only or anyone else with the same issue. I haven't wiped the phone. FYI I'm also using xposed framework.

Root for mi pad 2 not working. works great on Kenzo, i havent noticed any issues with whatsapp yet. Also i hope pending from WiFi to 3g data works, i always had to swap to 4g for data to work and then choose 3g. also i was loosing wifi connection now and then with 6.5.12
