Not necessary, because they unlocked your bootloader linking to your device's MI account. They only use SMS to sent you the verification code.

Mine is more than 7 hours if i use it often... and less if i use GPS I think it depends on how many apps you installed as well... too many background processes will drain battery.

actually the steps are the same for all xiaomi device. nothing new. http://en.miui.com/thread-221493-1-1.html but if you already did properly. then it must be admin error. please don't quote me, but i suspect the admin forgot to insert your activation code to your account after he/she sent...
